A USB security key is an external device that can store passkeys for multiple accounts. You plug it into a laptop or desktop for a quick, secure sign-in. This article walks you through setting up a passkey on a USB security key.### Before you start
Have your USB security key on hand. You’ll be asked to insert it partway through setup.
Step 1: Open your security info page
Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and sign in with your TMU account.
Step 2: Add a passkey sign-in method
- Select Add sign-in method.
- Choose Passkey.
- Click Next on the next two screens.
Step 3: Save the passkey to your security key
Follow the instructions for your computer’s operating system.
> macOS
- 1. If you’re asked to save the passkey to the Passwords app, click Cancel. This keeps the passkey from syncing to Passwords so it can be saved to your security key instead.
- 2. In the next pop-up, click Use a phone, tablet, or security key.
- 3. When the prompt with a QR code appears, insert your USB security key into your device and touch it with your finger. Do not scan the QR code.
- 4. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a memorable PIN and complete setup. You’ll use this PIN whenever you sign in with your security key.
> Windows
- 1. Select Security key.
- 2. Enter a memorable PIN for your security key. You’ll use this PIN whenever you sign in with your security key.
- 3. Enter a memorable name for your passkey.
Step 4: Confirm your passkey was added
To confirm setup worked, check your security info page. You should see a new Passkey entry listed under your account.
How to sign in with your security key
