Purpose: This document explains how to set up a peer review assignment in Canvas using Peer Review Allocation and Grading.

Note: Peer review lets students give each other feedback on an assignment submission. TMU has the newer Peer Review Allocation and Grading experience enabled, which allows a separate due date and grade for the peer review itself (in addition to the grade for the original assignment).

Steps

1. In the course navigation menu, click Assignments, then click + Assignment.

2. Fill in the assignment title, instructions, points, and due date as you normally would.

3. Under Submission Type, select Online, then choose the entry types you want to allow (text entry, file upload, etc.). Note: Peer review is not supported for External Tool or On Paper/No Submission assignment types.

4. Check the Require Peer Reviews checkbox.

5. Enter the number of reviews each student must complete, and optionally assign points for the peer review itself.

6. Set the peer review due date. This is separate from the original assignment's due date, so give students enough time to receive a submission and complete a thoughtful review after the assignment deadline passes:

7. Select any advanced configurations as needed:

8. Click Save (or Save & Publish) when you're done.

Canvas will automatically pair students for review as they submit, and will keep reassigning as needed up until the review's availability window closes.

9. (Optional) If you'd like to manually pair students for peer review or make allocation adjustments, you can do so on the assignment page by clicking Allocate Peer Reviews:
