Purpose: This document explains how to post an announcement in a Canvas course. Announcements are a good way to share important information with everyone in your course, in a format that is easily referenced by students.

Note: Your course must be published for students to receive announcement notifications. If you're scheduling an announcement for a future date, allow at least 15 minutes after publishing your course before it's set to go out.

How students are notified: Announcements are a great way to reach students because they show up in a few places at once:

On the Announcements page within the course
In the student's Dashboard, under their to-do/recent activity view
Via email.
On the course home page (if step 8 below is followed).

Steps

1. In the course navigation menu, click Announcements.

2. Click the + Announcement button:

3. Type a title for your announcement, then add your message using the content editor:

4. (Optional) Click Attach to add a file to your announcement:

5. Under Options, choose any additional settings you'd like, such as:

(a) Allow participants to comment – lets students reply to the announcement.
(b) Disallow threaded replies – keeps replies from being nested.
(c) Allow liking – lets users like replies.

6. By default, your announcement will post immediately and stay visible for the rest of the course. If you'd rather schedule it:

(a) Set a date and time in the Available from field to control when it appears
(b) Set a date and time in the Until field to control when it disappears

7. Click Publish.

8. (Optional) To make announcements appear on your course homepage, open your course's Settings and check Show recent announcements on Course home page:

Note: You only need to enable this setting once per coure.
