TMU Guest Wi-Fi Acceptable Use Policy

Guest WiFi Network Name: TMU-Guest
1. Purpose
This policy establishes the acceptable use of The Master’s University’s Guest Wi-Fi network. The guest network is provided as a convenience for temporary internet access only and is intended to support reasonable, lawful, and appropriate use while on organization property.
2. Scope
This policy applies to any person who connects a device to the Guest Wi-Fi network, including laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other internet-enabled devices. We do not support wired network access for campus guests. All visitors, vendors, contractors, event attendees, and other non-affiliated guests are expected to use the organization’s guest wireless network.
The guest wireless network does not provide access to the intranet or other internal institutional resources. Faculty, staff, and students are required to connect to the main wireless network for access to these services.
3. Acceptable Use
Guests may use the Guest Wi-Fi network for legitimate, lawful, and non-disruptive activities, such as:
Accessing websites
Checking email
Using standard business or educational web applications
Video conferencing or communication tools, subject to available bandwidth
Other routine internet activities that do not interfere with network operations
4. Prohibited Use
Guest Wi-Fi may not be used for any activity that is unlawful, harmful, disruptive, or inconsistent with this policy. Prohibited activities include, but are not limited to:
Violating any local, state, federal, or international law
Accessing, downloading, or distributing illegal content
Infringing on copyrights, trademarks, patents, or other intellectual property rights
Sending spam, phishing messages, or unsolicited bulk communications
Harassing, threatening, intimidating, or defaming others
Attempting to bypass network security controls, authentication, filtering, or access restrictions
Attempting to access institutional resources, the campus intranet, or other wireless networks available on campus
Scanning, probing, monitoring, or testing the vulnerability of any system, network, or device without authorization
Introducing malware, ransomware, spyware, or other malicious code
Setting up servers, hotspots, proxies, VPN tunnels, or other services intended to relay or share the guest connection
Setting up network infrastructure, such as WiFi range extenders or amplifiers
Running peer-to-peer file sharing applications for unauthorized distribution of content
Using the network in a way that degrades performance for others or consumes excessive bandwidth
Accessing systems, data, or accounts without permission
Misrepresenting identity or attempting to impersonate another person or system
5. Security and Privacy
The Guest Wi-Fi network is not intended for sensitive or confidential activity.
Users should avoid transmitting sensitive personal, financial, health, or confidential information unless they are using secure, encrypted services they
The organization may monitor, log, filter, or restrict network activity to protect users, systems, and network integrity.
Guests should not assume that any activity on the guest network is private.
6. Device Responsibility
Guests are solely responsible for the security and configuration of their own devices. This includes:
Installing and maintaining up-to-date operating systems and security patches
Using antivirus or anti-malware protection where appropriate
Keeping passwords secure
Avoiding unsafe websites, downloads, and untrusted wireless networks
The organization is not responsible for loss, damage, theft, corruption, or compromise of guest-owned devices or data resulting from use of the guest network.
7. Network Performance and Availability
The Guest WiFi network is Open Access, and all traffic on the network is unencrypted. Guest Wi-Fi is provided as available and without guarantee of uninterrupted service.
The organization may:
Limit bandwidth, session duration, or access times
Prioritize traffic as needed to support operational needs
Restrict access to certain sites, services, or protocols
Temporarily suspend or disable Guest Wi-Fi availability for maintenance, security, or operational reasons
To ensure your data and devices are protected while on any wireless network, the organization recommends the following as best practices:
Accessing only secure websites - URLs that begin with “https://”
Encrypting any confidential or sensitive information
8. Enforcement
Violation of this policy may result in one or more of the following actions:
Immediate termination of network access
Blocking of the device’s connection to the guest network
Reporting to security, management, law enforcement, or other relevant authorities when appropriate
Revocation of future Guest Wi-Fi privileges
Additional action permitted by law or organizational policy
9. Disclaimer
The organization makes reasonable efforts to provide a secure and functional guest network but does not guarantee:
Privacy of communications
Uninterrupted access
Protection from all security threats
Compatibility with all devices or applications
Use of the Guest Wi-Fi network constitutes acknowledgment of and agreement to comply with this policy.
10. Policy Changes
The organization reserves the right to update, amend, or replace this policy at any time without prior notice.
